Author: Konig, S; Wodarz, N; Unglaub, W; Johann, M
Abstract: Objective While the overall-prevalence of ADHD in adulthood was estimated between 2-6% substance use disorder was associated with ADHD in about 30-50%. Methods On this background 50 opiate addicts were investigated. Results 35% of the drug addicts fulfilled criteria of life-time ADHD, and 19% showed persistent symptoms. In this sample the ADHD(+)-patients were younger at age of onset, showed lower IQ-levels, and were more often judged or imprisoned when compared to ADHD(-)-patients. Moreover, ADHD was significantly associated with a positive family history of alcoholism and specific personality disorders. Conclusions ADHD might negatively influence onset and course of opiate use disorder. Therefore, an early diagnosis of ADHD might be crucial for preventing comorbid substance use disorder.
