Title: Development of a questionnaire for the assessment of attention-deficit-/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in preschoolers by parents and/or teacher ratings
Author: Breuer, D; Dopfner, M
Abstract: Objective: An age-adjusted ADHD Symptom-Checklist for kindergarten and preschool children (Fremdbeurteilungsbogen fur Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-/Hyperaktivitatsstorungen im Vorschulalter, FBB-ADHS-V) is examined. Aim of the study was to analyze validity and reliability of this adapted questionnaire. Method: Nationwide 103 pediatricians or child and adolescent psychiatrists recruited N = 708 kindergarten- and preschool-children, 2,9 to 7,3 years old. One sample (U8/U9, n = 521 children) was assessed during a routine pediatric screening. The clinical sample consisted of n = 187 children with externalizing behavior problems as rated by the physician. The questionnaire was rated by parents and preschool teachers; additionally a short checklist rated by the physician was used. Results: In confirmatory factor analyses a two factor solution was extracted which replicates the DSM-IV subcategories of hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention. Internal consistencies of all scales and the item-total-correlations of the adjusted items are acceptable. The correlations between parent and teacher ratings are at a medium level. Thus, the results of international and German studies in other age groups are replicated. Parents rate their children as more problematic than teachers. Boys have higher scores than girls. The symptom scores correlate with functional impairment. Conclusion: The FBB-ADHS-V can be used as a reliable and valid instrument for the assessment of ADHD symptoms in preschool children.
