Author: Blomeyer, D; Laucht, M; Hohm, E; Dyer, AS; Schmidt, MH
Abstract: External disorders in childhood and adolescence are regarded as, a risk factor for the development of alcohol use disorders. However, it is unclear whether this risk is increasing with age and whether it. holds for hyperkinetic disorder (HD). This article presents data from the Mannheim Study of Risk Children, a prospective longitudinal study of a birth cohort of 326 adolescents. External disorders were assessed from 2 to 15 years, alcohol use at age 15 years. Results show that external disorders from 8 years on predicted more heavy alcohol use at 15 years. Adolescents with pure HD did not differ from the healthy controls. Conduct disorder (CD) at 8 and 11 years was associated with more heavy but not higher regular alcohol use. It is concluded that CD, but not HD in late childhood and adolescence is a risk factor for heavy alcohol use in adolescence and should be targeted by prevention programs
